One night per year, the government sanctions a 12-hour period in which citizens can commit any crime they wish — including murder — without fear of punishment or imprisonment. Leo, a sergeant who lost his son, plans a vigilante mission of revenge during the mayhem. However, instead of a death-dealing avenger, he becomes the unexpected protector of four innocent strangers who desperately need his help if they are to survive the night.
Whereas the low-budget original The Purge centered on a stressful situation, this sequel seems to be more interested in controlling characters. Nevertheless, the ambiguous motif of the previous picture, the thought-provoking idea of whether the end justified the way, is finally gone.
The Purge: Anarchy is more purely black-and-white in its thinking. Here, just wealthy, evil, greedy people participate in the purge. Upsetting the balance much more is that the camera-shaking caliber of James DeMonaco’s direction. Any moment a chase or a shootout is necessary, the movie only turns to mush.
