The Matrix Reloaded

Six months after the events depicted in The Matrix, Neo has proved to be a good omen for the free humans, as more and more humans are being freed from the matrix and brought to Zion, the one and only stronghold of the Resistance. Neo himself has discovered his superpowers including super speed, ability to see the codes of the things inside the matrix and a certain degree of pre-cognition. But a nasty piece of news hits the human resistance: 250,000 machine sentinels are digging to Zion and would reach them in 72 hours. As Zion prepares for the ultimate war, Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity are advised by the Oracle to find the Keymaker who would help them reach the Source. Meanwhile, Neo’s recurrent dreams depicting Trinity’s death have got him worried and as if it was not enough, Agent Smith has somehow escaped deletion, has become more powerful than before and has fixed Neo as his next target.

This film lives up to fans’ expectations in various ways, serving as a bridge between the chapter that sets up the battle and the chapter that resolves it. The Matrix Reloaded has some narrative flaws, but you will find electrifying combat scenes, an audaciously dystopic vision, zillions of explosions and car crashes, even a steamy love scene, and visual effects that continue to raise the bar.

Some of the action sequences will simply knock your socks off. Real-life twins (and black belt karate instructors) Adrien and Neil Rayment play dreadlocked albinos who can turn themselves into ghost-like wraiths outside to destroy our heroes. And there’s a heart-stopping 14-minute chase and crash scene onto a freeway. But the picture’s strongest scene doesn’t have fancy special effects or explosions. It is the dialogue between Neo and the Oracle (played with endless warmth, humor, and spirit by the late Gloria Foster). The film also taps into epic questions of fate, causality, identity, as well as choice.
