Jack Sparrow, a freewheeling 18th-century pirate, quarrels with a rival pirate bent on pillaging Port Royal. When the governor’s daughter is kidnapped, Sparrow decides to help the girl’s love save her.

The same as the theme park ride that inspired it, the picture’s greatest strengths are its air and art management. The manufacturing design has that delightfully imaginative synthesis of classic book illustrations and some innate collective unconsciousness which gets the essence of each detail right, in the curve of the sail into some pirate’s pet monkey. Then come to the action sequences, equally energetic and enjoyable. The script has some nicely creepy twists and some well saucy lines. Johnny Depp falls prey to the pirate curse, talking as though he’s recovering from dental surgery and sometimes appears to be acting in his own picture entirely different from everyone else. However, he’s undeniably enjoyable to watch.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl also escapes the dreadful pirate curse. This is one about the curse of the pirate film, that has been proven to turn fine actors into eye-rolling, scenery-chomping over-actors and empty the bank accounts of film studios quicker than real-life pirates pillaged their victims. This one’s origins as a Disney theme park ride didn’t seem too promising. So perhaps it is those low expectations which made this movie look surprisingly pleasurable. In other words, if swashbuckling, rope-swinging, plank-walking, yard-arm-spinning, rum-drinking, double-crossing, colorful sidekicks, and all-round yo-ho-ho-ing sounds like fun, and particularly if you understand the theme park ride well enough to appreciate a couple of sly references, such as a replica of one of those ride’s most memorable moments.
