When a powerful satellite system falls into the hands of Alec Trevelyan, AKA Agent 006, a former ally-turned-enemy, only James Bond can save the world from an awesome space weapon that — in one short pulse — could destroy the earth! Following the longest dry spell in the James Bond film franchise (six years), director Martin Campbell and celebrity Pierce Brosnan provided a highly successful reboot with GoldenEye (1995). Where the show had grown lethargic through the 1980s, Campbell injected into it a new dose of sprightly fun. (It does not attempt to be”darker” such as the Daniel Craig entries.) Brosnan turned out to be the Bond many fans were waiting for: He was suave and tough but also funny and using an electrical screen presence.
Notably, the film introduced a new, feminine M (Judi Dench) and has been the first of the series to not be predicated upon the works of Ian Fleming. The screenplay is satisfyingly complex but allows for plenty of exciting chases, fights, and leaks. Indeed, even though it does contain a few silly moments, the whole movie crystallizes nicely. Even Tina Turner’s name song is excellent.
